Togetherness by Parabuteo78 Togetherness by Parabuteo78
My Etsy Shop      Twitter

EDIT: Decided to sell this after all, the original and prints of it are available here.

A mixed media painting; a watercolor background and Copic marker Whales with black multiliner and white gelpen for the highlights.

I used about a dozen different reference images, for the whales and for various details such as the eyes. I decided to use watercolor for the background because it would cost me a bit too much marker ink :P
And I used several different colored Copics on the background to smooth things out, I remember Cool Shadow and the Blender but there were others as well ;)

Time taken: about 6 hours give or take. The background took up most time.
Watercolors and Copic markers on A4 Bristol board.

Mixed feelings about this one, the watercolor could have been so much better... Oh well, just a reason to keep practising. I might redo this soon and then use watercolor paper instead of the Bristol.
Whales turned very well, really pleased with them. And large-scale whales are much easier and faster to color than sketchcard sized whales, much less fiddly :)

What do you think of my new signature/watermark? This also has an almost invisible watermark as well. Which I think is better than the obtrusive dA watermark ;)

I couldn't help but notice the Orca in the far background. Is this one a different type from a different pod? As it looks like the Antarctic pod ones (I'm not sure of the terms haha) compared to your resident orca family in the foreground :)

Watercolour on illustration board is a bear to work with. If you try a piece of hot press 300# watercolour paper, around $12 in USA, I think you will LOVE it. ☺

I have been trying to find hot press as a matter of fact, but it is very hard to find here. Most store don't carry it and if they do, it's terribly expensive.
I'm looking at foreign stores and eBay now :)

I recommend Blick Art Supply or Jerry's Artarama. See if there is shipping to your area. ☺ Sometimes you can find 300# hot press in ten packs. BFK Rives heavy weight paper may also be of interest to you. Rives is usually used by printmakers, I have used it for drawing and it is all around great paper.

Thanks, I love the big males myself too. There's just something about them.
I have another big Orca piece in the works, though I've only just started sketching. I'll post WIPs on my twitter like I did with this one ;)

Oh boy, umm, it should be for sale. If I can just get myself to part with it :)
I have no idea how much something like this would cost though, I have only sold sketchcards before.

it's always difficult to part with larger pieces! Especially after putting so much work into them! I saw your WIP for your next big piece and it looks lovely!

For pricing, I think it may be best to go off of what other people on Etsy sell their art for. Also think of how long it takes you to create the piece and how much materials you used.

I can't wait to see your next one! :)

Yes, I'm particularly pleased with him, especially his head.
Glad you like it and the watermark too! I designed it yesterday when I was preparing to upload it. I just got an idea for it :)

Thanks, designed it yesterday. (parabuteo is the Latin name for the Harris hawk, so it seemed fitting to include it:))
I won't put it on the cards, I usually don't bother watermarking them because they're so small anyway.
But I'm going to use this on the bigger drawings, but visible and invisible ;)

Very lovely! The only critique I have is not one that really matters, but the bottom right orca is actually a type C orca, which are from Antarctica. The others all look like Icelandic/Type 1 orcas. And in regards to orca eyes, as far as I know most are actually blue! Anyways, I love it. :D

And I know their eyes are blue with black/brown irises

What it should be actually; most of the eye is black/brown and the outer rim of the iris is blue.

You're right; I see what you mean and I think it's the angle of the body and the fact that the eye patch is a little too pointed that makes it look different. I'll see if I can correct that.
I also think that it might have gotten smudged a bit because I really wanted this one to be further away and I colored over it with markers to try and blend him in.

But they're all the same form really ;)
(Besides, a true Type C, or Ross Killer Whale, would have been much more two-toned in color; a grey body with the black cape on the top in front of the dorsal. I have a drawing of one in progress right now!)

And I know their eyes are blue with black/brown irises, I needed the reference more for placement, angles, folds and such ;)
Orca eyes are quite hard to see in some photos, so I have a couple of clear ones on hand to help out :)

Anyway, glad you like it and thanks for the critique!
